Relaxing after the morning ride or even work, 1850s.
The rather naive pencil sketch, 5½ x 3½ ins, shows an English gentleman having his boots removed by two servants while he reclines in a typical planter’s chair. Another servant is approaching with a drinks tray. Other details in the drawing give us an idea of the furnishing of a room in India in the 1850s. This sketch came with others from an archive of material from the Macdonald of Sandside family from the extreme north of Scotland although we cannot decide which of the family is depicted as several were serving in India in the mid 19th century.
This sort of unpublshed sketch is important in showing everyday life of a British bachelor in India.
