Prime Minister of Hyderabad, circa 1860s, by H J Nixon

His Excellency Salar Jung, Prime Minister to His Highness the Nizam. Original Vintage Photographic Portrait Hyderabad. 7 x 9ins [17 x 23cm] with Rounded Corners The somewhat faded sepia portrait, is pasted to a card leaf from a book or portfolio with details on the reverse. The card mount has a damp stain but this does not appear to affect the photograph itself. Nawab Mir Muhammad Ali Khan, Salar Jang [or Jung], 1829-1883. held important and powerful positions in the Nizam’s state, variously Prime Minister and co-Regent. The portrait is undated but we are inclined to put in in the late 1860s. In 1870 Salar Jun became the eighth recipient of the Knight Grand Cross of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India and later photographs show him wearing the star of that order. He is shown full length seated alongside a bookcase holding the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
