Order of the Crown of Romania, cased officer’s cross

The finely enamelled cross has the date of the accession of the King Carol I of Romania on the obverse [14th March 1881] when he became the first monarch of Romania from the house of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. The last King, Michael, died only at the end of last year. Unusually this example of the cross, which is occasionally found in British officers’ groups, retians its original case of issue. The ribbon bears a rosette. The case has a pebbled red leather lid with the cypher of King Carol in gilt beneath his crown. The case bears the mark of the supplier inside the lid Josef Resch & Fils. Bukarest.
