Lord Linlithgow, Viceroy of India, an invitation to Dinner 1938


A card invitation, 7 x 5.5 ins, embossed with Lord Linlithgow’s monogram beneath the coronet of a marquess, inviting Lieut Col & Mrs Sundius-Smith to dinner on the 29th December 1938. The card has a vertical fold. The dinner was held at Belvedere, Calcutta at 8.30pm and the guest list and seating plan are included with this card. Two examples are of the list and plan are tipped to old album pages so that one can see both sides. These are octavo in size and show a largish party of 96 attending including the Governor of Madras and the Maharaja of Jaipur. The commanding general of Nepal is shown as arriving after the dinner at 9.30pm. Although the capital of India moved from Calcutta to New Delhi in 1911 it was customary for the Viceroys to spend Christmas and New Year in Calcutta. Lt Col Sundius-Smith was commanding 1/15th Punjab Regiment at this time.
