Lord Brabourne, Governor of Bengal. An invitation to luncheon with the seating plan, 1938
An invitation on white card embossed in gold with Bengal beneath a royal crown inviting Lieut Colonel & Mrs Sundius-Smith to luncheon on 17th November 1938. The card, 5 x 4ins, is loosely held by corner mounts to part of an old album page. There is a water stain to the top left of the card. Beneath it is the seating plan, pasted by the blank rear leaf to the page. It is printed for the luncheon on 17th December 1938 at Government House, Calcutta and the plan within shows Mrs Sundius Smith seated next to the Governor and the Colonel next to Lady Brabourne. Although a fairly intimate luncheon party with just 12 guests protocol demanded the formality of printed seating plans. An interesting ephemeral survival. Lt Col Sundius-Smith was in command of a battalion of the 15th Punjab Regiment.
