Hon George N Curzon, an important signed copy of his work on the Pamirs 1896
Right Hon George N Curzon, M.P.: The Pamirs and the Source of the Oxus. Revised and reprinted from ‘The Geogrpahical Journal’ for Juluy, August, and September, 1896. The Royal Geographical Society [London], 1896 8vo. 83pp with illustrations from photographs in the text, the original folding map is lacking but we have been able to include [loosely inserted next to the blank to which the original map was attached] a fine, well folded copy of the 1896 map which accompanied the Geographical Journal. The book is bound in the original RGS hard binding of pale blue cloth gilt with quarter cream leather spine, the spine leather is rather scuffed and the top inch is retained only by the rear joint, there are old tape marks where the front hinge has been strengthened between the front free endpaper and the title page.
This may not sound a good copy, although the book is now very hard to find. However this one is exceptional in being signed by Curzon with a presentation inscription to H A Lennard who accompanied him on the first stage of his journey. The inscription reads: H A Lennard, from the companion of his journey, George N Curzon, 1897.
Apart from being mentioned in this book there is not a great deal of information easily available on Lennard although there is currently an interesting small, well identified group photograph including him and Curzon taken at Gilgit before they set off. Captain Younghusband, Political Officer at Chitral also accompanied Curzon on part of the journey.
