General Sir Harry Smith, Baronet of Aliwal on the Sutlej, G.C.B.


A steel engraved three quarter length portrait of the controversial general [ 1787- 1860 ] seated, wearing general’s uniform with medals and sword. The engraving measures 220 x 167 mm, having been close trimmed and pasted to a folded sheet of strong paper. The title has been added beneath in ink and the inside of the sheet has a tipped in sheet of paper with a manuscript inscription in his own hand dated Govt House, Devenport, 6th Nov 1853 and signed H G Smith. The two lines of text read The writing of Man ’tis said  displays, The genius he possesses in Many Ways. Loosely inserted is  printed memorandum of the life of the General and a printed obituary with his coat of arms is tipped to a corner of the paper.
