Envelope with 1911 Delhi Durbar cancellations

£20.00

The envelope, measuring 195 x 138mm, has four half anna green stamps of Edward VII with three offical Durbar cancellations for 3rd December. It is addressed to The Hon’ble Mr W Skinner, P.O.Bindukuri (nr Tezpur), Assam. William Skinner was an elected member of the Legislative Council of the Government of Eastern Bengal and Assam. The envelope has some brown stains.

The cancellation stamps are dated five days before the Durbar began so the letter would have been sent by someone involved in the setting up of this massive event. The only member of the Skinner family who is recorded as present in an official capacity at the Durbar is Captain Alexander Baird Skinner of the 5th Cavalry who was Adjutant and Camp Staff Officer with the Imperial Cadet Corps.
