Armorial bookplate of Sir Gore Ouseley, Baronet.
The impressive 4½ x 3½ ins bookplate has many quarterings and the supporters are Persian warriors no doubt added for Ouseley’s important work as British Ambassador Extraordinary there where he negotiated the 1812 Anglo-Persian Treaty and later mediated between Persia and Russia. These achievements are also shown in the pendant orders beneath the shield.
Sir Gore Ouselely [1770-1844] 1st Baronet came from an Irish family in Limerick and went out to India in 1788, initially in a mercantile capacity but linguistic skills led him into the service of Nawab Vizier of Oudh whose A.D.C. he became. nov23/4
