An officer at morning ablutions, 1852 in the Punjab
The pen and ink sketch, 5 x 3¾ ins, is titled Getting Up and shows the officer washing his face at a campaign wash stand. He wears loose Indian pyjamas and slippers and is standing alongside a lamp. The verso shows that the drawing was received in Scotland 13th August 1852. This sketch cam with others from an archive of material from the Macdonald of Sandside family from the extreme north of Scotland and the artist is almost certainly Lieutenant John Macdonald who was commissioned into the 18th Bengal N I in 1852 and served in the Survey Department of the Punjab.
This sort of unppublshed sketch is important in showing everyday life of a British officer in the field in India.
