A letter from home, India 1852.

The pen and ink sketch, 6¾ x 4¾ ins, shows a European family and an Indian servant delivering a letter to the lady of the house.  The verso shows that the drawing was received in Scotland 27th December 1852. This sketch came with others from an archive of material from the Macdonald of Sandside family from the extreme north of Scotland although we cannot be sure which of the several members of the family sent it home.

Such amateur sketches are important for showing us scenes of everyday life in India and domestic details of furniture, dress, etc.
