71st Bengal Native Infantry. Carte de visite of Lt Wellesley Campbell.

A carte de visite by J Moffat, 103 Prince’s Street, Edinburgh showing Mr Wellesley Campbell full length wearing civilian highland dress with Glengarry and kilt. The card is inscribed on the reverse “Mr Wellesley Campbell of Coninish, Lieut Bengal Army Nov 1866”. Wellesley Campbell was commissioned into the 71st Native Infantry in 1857. The regiment was one of those that mutinied and after the Mutiny he was shown as being on the cadre of officers of that regiment. In 1872 he was shown in the same position but “with the 14th NI”. Although there are numerous branches of the Campbells the unusual first name should make it possible to research this gentleman.  9  SOLD 24th March 2020
